Typical English Breakfast

 As seen on the brand new obsession of mine: Tomodachi Life EU edition, the proper English Breakfast has quite interesting elements of food compared to what i've grown with.  

An english breakfast consists of baked beans (heinz is very popular), pork sausages, smoked back bacon, fried eggs, fried bread, mushrooms, tomatoes, potatoes and black pudding. The closest i got to that was can beans and baked potatoes but whenever i want fiber in my diet i know that my go to food is beans just cause they're easy to find. And that made me question what is the nutritional history behind this combination of food.

Turns out the main deal: beans were imported from America in the 20th century. They became popular because they were cheap, shelf staple, providing plant based protein and fiber just like my choices. Science shows that beans were domesticated over 7.000 years ago in Mesoamerica which consists of today's Mexico, Belize, Guetamala and El Salvador. Which makes sense that they came from there.

Sausages, bacon and black pudding are pork products that were central to the rural british diet for centruis. Pigs are easy to keep and nose-to-tail eating guaranteed, ensuring nothing was wasted. Again a high protein source and was crucial for laborers. Though i can say that the most interesting piece of all is black pudding made from pig blood and oat starch. 

Eggs were from backyard hens, tomatoes and mushrooms were seasonal produces became standardised in 19th centuries and bread & potatoes were cheap filling carbohydrates to fuel long working days.

So far it's safe to say this was a working-class go to meal in all aspects of nutrition and accesibility. By time the rising middle class seem to adopt same meal in a more refined form. This meal spread both socially and geographically. A historical survival kit on a plate & hearty morning meal.
